Last weekend, January 24 and 25, 2026, was a masterclass in the intersection of science and sensory delight as Galiena, in partnership with WโineSpired, successfully concluded another intensive WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course.
Guided by the expertise of Xavier Ligot, participants embarked on a 16-hour journey through the worldโs most significant grape varieties and geographical indications.
Held at the vibrant New Bahru, the session moved beyond mere “label reading.” Xavier, drawing on his background as a former Head Sommelier of a 2-Michelin-star restaurant and a Court of Master Sommeliers certified professional, bridged the gap between complex theory and practical tasting.
The focus of the weekend was the fundamental WSET Level 2 curriculum:
- The 22 Principal Grapes: Understanding why a thick-skinned Cabernet Sauvignon behaves differently than a delicate Pinot Noir.
- Decoding Terroir: How over 70 Geographical Indications (GIs) influence the final profile of a wine.
- The SAT Method: Mastering the WSET Systematic Approach to Tastingยฎ to describe wines with precision and confidence.
This weekendโs cohort was particularly engaged, tackling the “pain” of memorizing regional climate influences and soil compositions with remarkable enthusiasm. From the structured acidity of cool-climate Rieslings to the bold tannins of Mediterranean reds, the group developed a deeper vocabulary for the liquid art they love.
